In 1989, The Heart Institute was the first in Palm Beach County to use the Automatic Implantable Cardiac Defibrillator, a lifesaving device that monitors cardiac activity and can electrically convert irregular heart rhythm to a regular rhythm. The Heart Institute was the nation's first to implant a metabolic pacemaker, designed to adjust to increased physical activity and emotional stress without the uncomfortable side effects associated with conventional pacemakers. The Heart Institute at JFK was also the first in Florida to use directional coronary atherectomy and the first in Palm Beach County to open an outpatient cardiac catheterization unit. |
